How to install 3DNA v2.1 on Windows
« on: January 14, 2015, 04:51:43 am »
Hey,

Thanks for the software,

I downloaded x3dna-v2.1 on my computer. It is in winzip format. But I could not find the setup file to set software :(

Did I make something wrong?

Thanks

Thanks for your interest in using 3DNA and posting your question on the Forum. Regarding installing 3DNA on Windows, did you checked the post titled How to install 3DNA 9n Linux and Windows? Basically, you need to install either Cygwin or MinGW on top of Windows to run 3DNA.

Hi again,

Thanks for your message.

Now I downloaded MinGW and Ruby. And x3DNAv2.0 and x3DNAv2.1 in rar format. I tried v2.1 first, then downloaded the other. But I can not still open the setup file for the x3dna program. Please see the attachment, how my C drive and see x3dna_setup file which can not be opened by my computer. I tried to open that file using MinGW  :-\ but not worked either. Do I need anything else that I can do by myself? Or just look for a specialist to overcome this?

I am just a molecular biologist, so very unskilled in this area. So, sorry for disturbing you :(

Thanks

Hi,

As a side note, could you please follow up along this thread instead of starting a new topic in the "Downloads" section? That section is not publicly accessible so general visitors of the Forum won't be able to see your message and benefit from our discussions. Thanks for you collaboration!

3DNA v2.0 and v2.1 are distributed in the same tarball (.tar.gz) format (not in rar format). From your attached image, you seem to already have 3DNA (automatically) installed. Since 3DNA is a commandline tool, it is intended to be run under MinGW Shell (or Cygwin) in Windows. The installation and setup of 3DNA should be quite straightforward, by design. Unfortunately, that's clearly not the case for "a molecular biologist" like you. So try to ask a local expert to help you out -- it should not take that long (~10 minutes). Or you could try web-3DNA or 3D-DART which provide web-interfaces to commonly used 3DNA functionality.

Depending on your needs, you may find DSSR fits the bill. DSSR comes with a detailed User Manual and does have a Windows version -- see my post DSSR for Windows, one executable fits all.

You are more than welcome. Please do not hesitate to ask questions here. I will try my best to help. Thanks to your feedback, I am considering how to improve 3DNA v2.x support under Windows.

Best regards,
